Laskennat toteutetaan vuosittain talvisin ja ne kattavat kaikki lintulajit. Laskenta-aineisto alkaa talvesta 1956/57 ja vuodesta 1976 lähtien laskennat on toteutettu kolme kertaa talvessa (marraskuu, vuodenvaihde, helmi-maaliskuu). Laskentojen menetelmät ja lisätietoja löytyy osoitteesta:
