Description:
Trapping indices of small rodents from nationwide monitoring census, separately for field and forest habitats, spring and summer. Indices are pooled numbers of all trapped small rodents.
Description (fi):
Valtakunnallisen pikkujyrsijöiden seurantapyyntien runsausindeksit, erikseen pelto- ja metsähabitaateille, keväälle ja syksylle. Indekseissä laskettu yhteen kaikki saaliiksi saadut pikkujyrsijät.

Methods:
Small rodent abundance index data are collected biannually, in spring and autumn, in forested and open habitats locations throughout Finland. Trapping is in conducted in two habitat types in almost all locations: spruce (Picea abies) or mountain birch (Betula pubescens subsp. czerepanovii) forests and in open grassland habitats, primarily old agricultural land no longer in use. Spring trapping takes place between mid-March and mid-June and autumn trapping between mid-August and mid-October, depending on local climate. Trapping is conducted with standard metal mouse snap traps, baited with bread. At each location, ca. 50–100 traps are set either (i) in a line, in clusters of three traps with an inter-trap distance of 1–2 m and an intercluster distance of 10–20 m, or (ii) according to the small quadrate method (Myllymäki et al., 1971). Traps are set for 1–4 nights and checked and and re-set if necessary once a day. Trap nights refers to the number of traps set multiplied by the number of nights a give trapping session lasted.

The density index is calculated as: [(pooled number of trapped rodents + 1) / (number of trap nights)] x 100, separately for field and forest habitats.
